Expectations and Information
UIL helps students to develop leadership, responsibility, and decision making skills while honing skills or learning new skills.
~ Students may try out for as many teams as they would like, but it is highly recommended that students not be on more than one team for the school day events (usually a Tuesday or Wednesday) and one team for the Saturday events. Often times testings start late, and students will not be permitted in 2nd event rooms when they've begun testing. It is not up to the coaches to make sure students are to secondary events.
~ Students must decide on which team they would like to participate; they may do this on their own or with their family. It is not the responsibility of the coach, team, or UIL Coordinator to make these decisions. Aside from information sent via school-wide notices, coaches and the UIL Coordinator communicate with students directly about UIL happenings.
~ Being selected from many capable students a significant honor. If you are not able to attend practices or the competition, please tell your coach immediately so s/he may select another contestant for the competition.
~ Coaches will work with teams to determine times and locations for practice and make sure you know the details of the competition day. Students must participate in practices at least 80% of the time to attend celebration events.
~ Practicing includes being in contact with your coach when you will miss a practice, checking and answering emails, and attending practice.
~ It is possible that teams will have all three testing spaces filled and have an alternate. It is up to the team to decide how alternates are handled (whether there is no alternate, decide before hand who is the alternate, or decide the day of). Students will be large participants in this and sometimes sole deciders. UIL helps to develop critical problem-solving skills.
~ The UIL academic experience at Hill Country involves student attendance at practices as set by coaches, and for some, it will also involve missing school or attending on a Saturday to compete.
~ All UIL students must be passing at the time of the competition to participate.
~ Students are expected to dress appropriately on the day of the competition. T Shirts will be for sale in February. Students are not required to purchase a shirt, but they are expected to dress as asked for the competition.
~ Participants are expected to follow the Hill Country standards: honesty, respect, and pride.
